It is estimated that kefalonia as been inhabited since 10000 B.C when it was divided into four distinct and autonomous democracies that comprised the "Kefalonian Quadrapolis" (Sami, Krani, Palli and Pronnoi). It is believed that the names of these four city-states were derived from the names of mythical Kefalos' four sons. Today Pronnoi occupies the nourthestern part of Elios-Pronnoi Municipality. The Elios region lies in the southeastern side of the municipality and owes its name to the Mycenaean hero Elios who according to Greek mythology shared the rule over Tafos island with Kefalos. The most significant archeological find however is found at Bortzi in Tzanata Village. It is a vaulted tomb of the Mycenaean era. The discovery of the Tomb proves the existence of a significant Mycenaean center and is reasonably connected to the search of the geographical location of the Homeric Ithaca. Other significant sites of the archaeological interest include the Temple of Apollo on the location of St.George's chapel in Skala dated to the 6th century B.C., and the roman villa in Skala which bears fabulous mosaic floors.
